Filter Cotton & Filter Stones: Must-Know Basics for Aquarium Filtration

A clean and stable water environment is the key to keeping fish, shrimp and other aquatic pets healthy. Among all aquarium filtration materials, filter cotton and filter stones are the most common and practical choices. They work together to purify water in different ways. Today let’s talk about their functions, usage methods and maintenance tips, to help you build a reliable filtration system.

What Is Filter Cotton?

Filter cotton is a soft, porous fibrous material. It is usually placed in the front layer of the filtration system. Its core job is physical filtration.

It can trap visible impurities in the water, such as leftover feed, fish waste, suspended particles and floating debris. These messy substances will make the water turbid and affect the viewing effect. Filter cotton intercepts them effectively, so the aquarium water can stay clear all the time.

This material comes in different densities. Coarse filter cotton has larger gaps, which allows water to pass through quickly and is mainly used to block large dirt. Fine filter cotton can capture tiny particles for better water clarity. It is recommended to use coarse cotton first and then fine cotton in layers, which balances filtration efficiency and water flow speed.

What Are Filter Stones?

Filter stones are hard porous filter media made of natural materials or sintered materials. They are generally placed behind filter cotton, focusing on biological filtration.

There are countless tiny holes on the surface and inside each filter stone. These spaces are perfect habitats for beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria are vital for aquariums. They can decompose harmful substances produced by pet excreta and residual food, such as ammonia and nitrite. These toxic substances will damage the health of aquatic creatures if accumulated. Filter stones cultivate stable bacterial communities and keep the water quality safe long-term.

Different types of filter stones have slight differences. Porous ceramic stones, volcanic rocks and mineral filter stones all have strong bacteria-cultivating ability. They are durable and do not easily break down in water, so they can be used for a long time.

How Do They Work Together?

Filter cotton and filter stones play complementary roles and form a complete filtration chain.

When water circulates through the filter device, it first flows through filter cotton. Large dirt and floating matter are blocked here, preventing these impurities from covering the surface of filter stones and affecting the survival of beneficial bacteria. After preliminary physical purification, the water flows to the filter stones. The beneficial bacteria attached on the stones further decompose invisible harmful components. With the cooperation of the two materials, the water realizes double purification of cleaning and disinfection.

Daily Use & Maintenance Tips

Maintenance for Filter Cotton

Filter cotton gets dirty easily and needs regular cleaning or replacement. When you find the cotton turns dark and the water flow slows down, take it out and rinse it with clean water. Do not use detergent or hot water, which will damage the fiber structure.

Do not clean all filter cotton at one time. Replace or clean part of it each time, to avoid completely removing a small number of beneficial bacteria on the surface. If the cotton becomes thin, hardened or loses elasticity after long-term use, replace it with a new one in time.

Maintenance for Filter Stones

Filter stones do not need frequent cleaning. Frequent scrubbing will wash away a large number of beneficial bacteria that have settled inside. Normally, just rinse off the surface dirt gently with running water when cleaning the filter system.

If the stones are blocked seriously after years of use and the water flow is severely affected, you can soak and clean them properly. There is no need for frequent replacement. Good-quality filter stones can be used for several years.

Layout Suggestion

Follow the rule of "front physical filtration, rear biological filtration". Put filter cotton at the water inlet side, and place filter stones behind it. Do not reverse the order, otherwise dirt will stick to the filter stones and reduce the overall filtration effect.
